Ecological feminism signifies a cluster of various positions that applies feminist approaches to environmental philosophy. Ecological feminists have argued that in dominant western traditions, women and other oppressed groups have been historically associated with nature, and both have been de-valued. This article provides an overview of ecological feminist critiques of dualistic thinking and logics of domination. It then provides examples of major ecological feminist concerns, including animal welfare, environmental racism, and development. Finally, it examines and rejects the popular criticism that ecological feminism is necessarily essentialist. © 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
