We have partnered with Appalachian State University staff including Drs. Rebecca Witter, Shea Tuberty, and Carol Babylak since 2020 to conduct over 190 private well water tests for residents in Sampson County, in partnership with the Environmental Justice Community Action Network (EJCAN). Sampson County is home to the state’s largest landfill, a wood pellet facility, countless poultry facilities, and it has one of the highest concentrations of hog operations in the country; these facilities are disproportionately located in communities of color in Sampson County and their operations threaten water and environmental quality to negatively impact residents’ health and well-being.
