headshot of Amy Kryston

MPH candidate in Global Health, 2023

Amy (she/hers) has been with the EJ Clinic since June 2021, where she has assisted with a community health assessment in Caswell County and hazard mapping (maps!) in Sampson County. She is now exploring access to safe sanitation (crap!) throughout North Carolina. Amy was first introduced to issues of environment justice when working as an environmental engineer in Chicago, where she saw that environmental hazards like landfills are frequently placed in communities of color and lower-income communities due to historical and current discriminatory practices. In her time with the EJ Clinic, she has further witnessed the insidious nature of environmental injustices, and how such inequity can compound other injustices like structural racism and the criminalization of poverty, but also the formidable power of community advocacy. She plans on continuing her research on safe sanitation in marginalized communities in the US and in informal and formal settlements internationally. When she’s not making maps and studying crap, Amy can be found crafting, greeting strange dogs, hanging out in the outdoors, or searching for a smooth oat milk latte.
